The Improved Wood Stove (IWS) is a ceramic stove (mixture of clay and charred rice husks) and a metal shell and a detachable “mouth” that can shift the stove from a charcoal burner to a wood burning stove.
The stove is locally produced in Laos using local easily-available materials. The quality and efficiency of the cookstoves is lab-tested based on strict protocols and research is carried out to optimise design. Each unit is designed to last several years in contrast to previous models which only last a few months.
The stove is produced as part of the Improved Cookstoves Programme (ICS), which has been implemented by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, and ARMI, and funded by the European Union (EU) SWITCH-Asia Programme.
